finals and finals.

IT’S HERE. Finals! I don’t know whether to be excited or scared. How about both? Excited… no, SUPER excited to end the semester but scared to take these finals. Still, though, at least it’s the end.

I was reminded by Mrs. Alex Williams to update my blog so this one’s for you!

Good luck to everyone this week!

“occupy seattle” uproar.

I just want to blurb for a few minutes about all the commotion in Seattle that has caused a whirlwind of critical opinion and news reports all over the world. During a movement titled “Occupy Seattle,” what the media are calling peaceful protestors were assembled in the city where they were resisting the orders of police and creating anything but a peaceful environment. The uproar has now spread worldwide as an 80-year-old woman and a pregnant teen were in the crowd when authorities used pepper spray as force to scatter the protestors. Many are saying it is unlawful and immoral that police would use such “violence” on elderly or pregnant women. I, however, believe that the use of pepper spray, or any legal force of action for that matter, is not age-specific, nor should it be. There should be no room in law concerning physical force by authorities for pity or special restrictions based on age or impregnation. Both the elderly woman and pregnant teen chose to be in that location at that time and also resisted orders of police. Using pepper spray was a last resort for authorities in desperation to calm things down. On a side note, epper spray affects everyone the same; whether its victim is young, old, pregnant or not. Both of these women and anyone else involved in the movement were treated equally, which is something this country has been working toward for decades and will continue to do so daily. We are too far ahead to start taking steps back now. That’s all.

best remedies for boredom.

So I’m busy all the time, but now and then I just want to surf around the internet to see what I can find. I’ve compiled a list of my favorite websites to share and these are always my go-to destinations when I’m surfing “just for fun.”

10.) The Onion (theonion.com)
This is possibly one of the weirdest and most pointless websites out there. It is nothing but fake news. Nothing is real but it is entertaining because it’s all reported in a legitimate news report style.

9.) Photobucket (photobucket.com)
I like to check this site out when I need inspiration for anything creative–especially photography. Millions of photographs are on this one website and I guarantee you’ll find something you’ll like.

8.) Lifehacker (lifehacker.com)
If you’re looking for ways to be more productive (or even if you’re not), this one is for you. It provides tips and tricks on a daily basis that will help you get stuff done. It’s that simple.

7.) College Humor (collegehumor.com)
This one has the most epic videos, pictures and stories you’ll find anywhere. It’s hilarious! Anything that could go wrong for college students–it’s there. From embarrassments and epic fails to ways to prank somebody, you have to check it out.

6.) eBay (ebay.com)
Okay, so I rarely buy anything from eBay but sometimes it cures boredom. Maybe I’m weird, and if so, just keep scrolling.

5.) Pandora (pandora.com)
This is a favorite and the only reason it’s number five is because it doesn’t serve as a remedy to aforementioned blog title alone. You will still have to find something to do while listening to ANY kind of music you choose from this delicious website but, hey, I couldn’t leave it off! Who doesn’t love anything that knows exactly what you want to hear?

4.) Picnik (picnik.com)
This is a great photo editing website if you find yourself bored enough to edit some photos that could use a little revamping. It doesn’t serve professional photographers very well because of all its limitations but for most anybody else, it’s fantastic! In fact, it can be overwhelming if you’re new to the whole “photo editing” trend that seems to be so popular these days. My only advice; keep the use of filters to a minimum–it degrades the quality of your photo quickly.

3.) Online Shopping (category)
I totally realize “online shopping” isn’t a website… it’s a hobby. A very fun one, I might add. We all do it pretty often, I think. Whether you are looking for clothes, things for the house or textbooks, it’s a dang fun thing to do. If you’ve never caught yourself shopping online for more than two hours at a time, though, it may not be for you. Even if I can’t buy everything I find, I like to think it keeps me up to date on the newest “stuff”.

2.) Social Networking Sites (twitter.com, facebook.com, plus.google.com)
Chances are you are already a member of at least one of the sites mentioned above. We all know what Facebook is but what about Twitter? Twitter has really taken off in terms of popularity in the last year or two. It started with celebs keeping their fans up to date with what’s happening in their life but now… now it’s everyone. These days, you don’t even have to be a person to have a Twitter. You will find businesses, events and even animals with Twitter pages. Do you tweet? Check it out if you don’t.

1.) StumbleUpon(stumbleupon.com)
Now, my favorite! Warning: stumbling can be addictive and you may find yourself on this one for hours at a time. I’m not even going to tell you what it is–I can’t! It’s just TOO good. I highly recommend this one.

Hope you enjoy these remedies for common boredom.

light the night.

Tonight, I attended the 2011 DeKalb County VFW Fair and took quite a few photos while I was there. I just wanted to post some here for you guys to see. Enjoy!

leadership retreat 2011.

This past weekend (9/23 – 9/24) was the annual Mustang Leadership Academy sponsored by the Student Government Association, Phi Theta Kappa, Mu Alpha Theta and Sigma Kappa Delta. In three words: IT WAS FUN. I met some amazing student leaders who are now among my closest friends. I attended the retreat in 2010, too, and it was just as fun then. It started at NACC, where we met Friday afternoon and loaded our vehicles full of people, overnight bags, food and anything else imaginable. We then traveled to a lake house on Weiss Lake that was to be our home for the weekend. After getting settled in, we played some ice-breaker games to meet everyone and then a leadership activity that teaches one of our 3-4 values we were to learn over the weekend. This was followed by dinner and then some free time. There was NO bed time. You read that right. We were allowed to stay up as late as we want–and that we did. Some of us were up until about 3 A.M. Anyway, some of us went down to the dock on the lake and while some swam, others talked. We ended up trying to sleep on the dock but as it got later (or earlier, if you look at it that way), the air became wet and cool. Some slept in the boat under the roof, while Ryan Tramel (SGA President) and I found a random water toy in the garage. When I say water toy, I mean a big one that you pull behind a boat. This particular one was a two-seater, which was perfect for two skinny dudes looking for a decent place to sleep–considering we were locked out of the house and all of its conveniences. The blow-up water toy turned out to be a not-so-bad bed. The next morning, we were up at 8 A.M. for breakfast and more leadership activities and lessons. We left after lunch and the ride home was possibly the most interesting part of the whole trip. I won’t go into detail, though; sorry :)
Hope you guys are having a great semester and check back soon for more posts.

Fall semester.

How’s everyone doing? Here’s to hoping your Fall semester is going better than mine. Let’s just say I easily fall prey to procrastination and given that I have two online classes this semester, that’s not a good thing. I’m already behind in both classes. As for the two other classes on campus, they’re not going too well, either. I’m getting by, though.. but it’s just that. Getting by. I’m so ready for Christmas break already. Better yet, though, graduation! Then it’s on to Tuscaloosa! YES. Talk to you soon.

T.O.Y.S. dance crew = LEGIT.

Soo the black light dance is… SEVEN days away! That’s one week from today and I’m pumped. We’re working hard on making it pretty much the best welcome back event ever. T.O.Y.S. dance crew has been rehearsing for a couple of weeks and I know they’re excited too. I’m glad to see such a great response on Facebook. If you haven’t already RSVP’d, check out the Facebook page by searching “White Night Black Light”. You can check out who will be there and everything that’s included, too. Did I mention FREE cover? Yeah.. and free glow sticks and necklaces for the first 150 dancers. We’re going to have the place blacked out all the way around and then covered in black lights and soaked in FOG. What happens in the dark stays in the dark, right? lol see you there!

SGA welcome back event.

So we have officially announced our Welcome Back Event for 2011! SGA will host this event on Friday, August 19th. We have a Facebook event page where we hope you’ll RSVP (link). Let us know what you think and feel free to offer any suggestions. We’d love to hear how you think we can improve the event. It’s going to be legit. Like I have said in all the orientations, we would never plan an event that we wouldn’t want to attend ourselves. Hope to see you all there!
